Awesome red!

Those of us that love red hair have also had to stress about everything that comes with it: keeping it vibrant and shiny, make it the right shade, a believable shade or a bright shade.

Here are all of your red travails unraveled!

image

1. Find the shade that you like, bring pictures, be prepared to show your stylist not only what you do like, but what you don’t, as well.

2. Wear what you feel comfortable in, especially if you are going to a new stylist. We can tell a lot about you by the way you dress and style your hair. I am not here to judge you, but I am here to give you reasonable advice and to give you a color that you love. If you come in dressed like your mother and want something more you, it can be harder to get there. I may go more subtle or more exaggerated than what you are looking for. This also helps matching to your wardrobe since red can be a major change.

3. Use a shampoo and conditioner specifically for color. You want to hold that color there as long as possible and as vividly as possible. My favorites are Kerastase Chroma Captive and Chroma Riche and Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner for Beautiful Color or Bumble and bumble Hairdresser ‘ s Invisible Oil Shampoo and Conditioner.

4.  On that note, wash and especially rinse your hair with cool water. This collapses the cuticle, smooths it, and keeps your color in your hair.

5.  Use product! Even if you don’t blow-dry your hair, it is important to protect it. If you do use heat, Bumble and bumble ‘ s Blowout line is awesome, as is Oribe Creme for Style. Whether you blow-dry or not, Kerastase’ Elixir Ultime oils are great, either the Moringa Immortal for strength or The Imperial for color are my favorites. They are light, not heavy at all.

6.  Once a month get a deep condition, preferably one with protein because color molecules cling to the protein in your hair and when that is compromised, it has less to cling to and doesn’t stay as brilliant. For take home, Bumble and bumble Mending Conditioner and Kerastase Masque Force Architect are amazing. If you get this done at a salon, my suggestion is the Kerastase Fusio-Dose treatment that can be tailored to your specific needs.

Proper Manors and the Filmed in Utah Awards

Last night was the Filmed in Utah Awards, and I was privileged to go. Proper Manors, the web series that I work on as the head of the Hair and Makeup department, was nominated for several awards and everyone was so excited that writer and director Brandyn Cross won for Best Song and L. D. Weller won for Best Actor. All of this after a full day of appointments at High Life Salon & Drybar. I am so grateful for my clients and my coworkers!

Although I didn’t win, I am so grateful that I was nominated!  Thank you, Buxom Modern Plus Boutique for the help and the dress!

I look forward to more filming, always improving and more awards for the show at the newly named Utah Film Awards!

How to get amazing Balayage and Ombre

We all want beautiful hair color. Unfortunately we have all had experiences where we didn’t get the color we wanted. Here are some ways to avoid that.

image

1. Bring pictures! These can be torn out of a magazine, on your tablet or even your phone.
2. Compare what you want to what you have. Things like “I want blonde” or “I want just a little lightness” don’t make a lot of sense because they are not precise. However, if you want your hair just 2 shades lighter or two shades darker, it’s easier.
3. Know your hair history and don’t lie. If you had your hair colored 6 months ago and your hair is long, I need to know that. If you have dark hair and you dye the ends every time you get it done, I need to know that. This is so that we, your hairstylists can make the correct formulation and give you correct expectations. Plus, we may not tell you, but we can tell.
4. Know the difference between Warm and Cool. This is important because usually people have a strong opinion on what they like in their hair. If you usually like hair that is sun kissed, you probably like warmth. If you constantly fight brass or feel like your hair is too yellow, you probably prefer cool tones. If you don’t know -ask-! We are happy to show you.

5. Listen when we give you advice. We want you to have beautiful hair too! We have reasons to give you the advice we do! We love to geek out on hair and tell you why we do things so if you are wondering why we tell you to do or use something, just ask.

Red Carpet Glamour

Tomorrow I am walking the red carpet for a project I have been working on, Proper Manors, and it brings to mind the question “What is real elegance and glamour?”  In life, to me, this is knowing who you are and being that, doing that, with no regrets and no limits.  In appearance, it is making a look timeless and flattering while still unique and you.  Without making it personal, it is a beautiful dress, or outfit, but it is just an outfit.

Specifically, keep it simple.  If you have a sleek figure, make the most of it, follow the line of your body.  You can make it formfitting or soft, but be aware of what looks good on you.  Don’t get carried away with too much superfluous decoration, frills, ruffles… all the extras, it will just distract from your own beauty.  At the same time, don’t be afraid to take a chance, make it your own.  If you are more curvacious, take advantage of your curves, but keep the form of the dress more structured so that it accentuates your body shape without letting everyone see what you would rather hide.

For men, please please please, dress up.  Wear a dress shirt and tie, don’t forget all the trimmings.  French cuffs are sexy and remembering tie clip, cufflinks, shined shoes and all the rest only give you attention in the best way.  Personalize your look, vests, cravats, a flattering cut all will give you a doubletake.

How to get good hair every day

There are a few different parts to getting your hair to do what you want and having a good hair day every day. The first is Structure. You must have something in the hair, not just to protect against heat and the environment, but to give your style, whatever it is, support to stay beautiful all day. The second thing to think about is Form. If you like sleek, straight hair, roughing your hair or drying it curly is not going to help you. You will not get volume from letting your hair airdry flat against your head and beautiful curls do not magically appear just by tousling. Keep your result in mind as you style your hair. Finally, remember your Finish and what you want out of it.

Structure is what will hold your style and the texture you want. There is no way you can hold what you want to do with your hair without that support. Using product makes getting what you want out of your hair possible.  Also, you will find that using the appropriate product will make a huge difference. For volume, blowdry your hair. My favorite products are Paul Mitchel Awapuhi Wild Ginger Hydrowhip mousse and Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray.  Use a mouse to get a soft, voluminous finish with a brush. Thickening spray is better for more stubborn hair and also for more hold. You can use it to dry style curls or blowdry and even set your hair.

Form is what you are doing to get the shape that you want out of your hair. Think about what you want your final look to be and then what you need to do to get there. Here are a few key tips… To get more volume or to straighten your hair, give good tension. Pull your hair the opposite way it lays for more volume. Always use a nozzle and point it down your hairshaft, toward the ends, for a cleaner, more sleek finish. Blowdry the ends of your hair with a brush so they look flawless. For curly hair, try twisting it and then diffusing it with high heat, low speed. I love Bumble and bumble Straight and Paul Mitchel Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Oil for smooth hair.

When Finishing your hair, ask yourself a few questions. Do you want your hair shiny? Do you have to fight humidity? Are you looking for tousled? Moldable? Sleek? All of these come into play. How firmly do you want your hair to hold? Then ask your stylist what the right product for you is.
